I-7: Maternal Signalling to the Placenta

Background: Though it is well established that maternal blood-borne signals influence highly the growth of the placenta, the mechanisms are not known. In vitro trophoblast culture models are limited by an inability to reconstruct the polarised bilayer of the human hemochorial placenta. We have used a first trimester villous tissue explant system to investigate how growth factors interact with p...

Combining cytokine signalling with T-bet and GATA-3 regulation in Th1 and Th2 differentiation: a model for cellular decision-making.

Differentiation of uncommitted T cells into Th1 and Th2 subpopulations depends on both intracellular events controlling expression of transcription factors T-bet and GATA-3 and interactions between cells mediated by cytokines, particularly IL4 and IFNgamma. A great deal is known about the intracellular and extracellular events involved in Th1 and Th2 (Th) differentiation, but how these are inte...

Dissecting stimulus-specific Ca2+ signals in amyloplasts and chloroplasts of Arabidopsis thaliana cell suspension cultures

Calcium is used by plants as an intracellular messenger in the detection of and response to a plethora of environmental stimuli and contributes to a fine-tuned internal regulation. Interest in the role of different subcellular compartments in Ca(2+) homeostasis and signalling has been growing in recent years. This work has evaluated the potential participation of non-green plastids and chloropl...

A complex mechanism of facilitation in pituitary ACTH cells: recent single-cell studies.

The transfer of information by chemical signals during complex biological processes can, with increasing frequency, be described in terms of interacting signal pairs. External signalling is rarely monolithic; rather, signal pairs are utilized in processes such as hormone secretion, neurotransmission, cell growth and differentiation. The dualism of external signalling often results in the occurr...

cAMP signalling in pathogenic fungi: control of dimorphic switching and pathogenicity.

Morphological changes in pathogenic fungi often underlie the development of virulence and infection by these organisms. Our knowledge of the components of the cell signalling pathways controlling morphological switching has, to a large extent, come from studies of pseudohyphal growth of the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in which control is exerted via changes in the intracellular cAM...
